Infographic: Origin of Ol-Chiki letters

Did you Know?

Pandit Raghunath Murmu invented the Ol-Chiki script in 1925 when he was just 20 years old.

The reason, Ol-Chiki looks different from the Indic Scripts( Bengali/Devanagari/Oriya) or the Roman script is that it is not derived from any of those. In fact, to create the script, Pandit Raghunath Murmu took inspiration from mother nature.

From time immemorial, nature has been an integral part for the people of Santal Tribe. For this reason, Ol-Chiki script was created as an approximation of various animate and inanimate objects or sound from nature. For example, the word /AT/ means Earth and the shape of letter /AT/ is derived from the round shape of Earth. Similarly /UD/ means mushroom and so looks the shape of the letter /UD/.
